Essential Curly Hair Accessories You Need In Your Life

As a Curly Hairdresser, I've seen firsthand how the right products and accessories can completely change someone's waves and coils. The right accessories can make a world of difference in your styling routine, making it easier so you can stop dreading wash day and get on with life! In this guide, I share my essential curly hair accessories all available on Amazon UK that will help you care for your gorgeous locks effortlessly.

1. Microfiber Hair Towels

There is nothing worse than spending 15 minutes applying gel or cream, forming clumps, only to plop hair and start to see the dreaded frizz appear before you have even reached for the diffuser! Drying curly hair without creating frizz can be tricky and using traditional cotton towels can strip your curls of moisture, and 'bobble' the hair, leading to unwanted frizz. Microfiber hair towels are a fantastic solution. These towels are designed to be highly absorbent, quick-drying, and gentle on your curls, reducing frizz by up to 50% compared to cotton towels. After washing your hair and applying product, gently scrunch your curls with the microfiber towel to encourage those defined, frizz-free locks.

2. Ridge Brush

Detangling curly hair requires care, finesse and a bit of TLC. This particular Brush is my absolute go to for not only detangling the 'tangliest' (is that a word even!) of curls but also helping with seperation, clumping and even product distribution. Easy peasy and simply a must have in any curly girl's arsenal!

This specific design comes in a multitude of colours and I love this one as it matches the salon of course. Buy it here from Amazon £7.99

3. Silk Bonnet and/or Pillowcase

Protecting your curls is vital to keeping them healthy. Silk Bonnets (or Pillowcases if you get hot at night and I'm talking temperature not shenanigans) are excellent accessories for maintaining curl integrity. They create less friction than cotton, helping to reduce frizz and breakage and they also stop natural hair oil from being absorbed too, so its a win-win all round.

I love this by LitBear - A bit of luxury as its made with grade 6A pure silk and comes with a free scrunchie. £25.99. Buy it here

4. Hair Scrunchies and Claw Clips

I see alot of breakage in my chair caused by simply pulling hair too tight into a hard band that gets ripped out at the end of the day (boo-hoo!) Opting for a fabric-(preferably silk or satin) covered hair scrunchy is less likely to cause breakage and these types of ties can reduce hair stress by up to 70%.

Claw clips (visions of eagles here, who on earth named them this?) are also invaluable for sectioning your hair for styling or keeping curls out of your face during work or workouts and come in a huge variety of sizes and colours. Claw clips are also great if you want to air dry with volume. After applying your chosen product, simply pinch and clump small sections of hair together at the root and leave to dry.

5. A Specialised Hairdryer for Curly Hair

If you want volume and really bouncy curls, you will only achieve this by diffuse drying.....I'll say it again from rooftops "Diffuse drying is the only way to get bouncy, volumious curls!"

And hands-up who spent in excess of £100+ for GHDs when they were in the 'straight-hair' phase of their life!! And yet many curlies still have an old hairdryer with the diffuser attachment which quite frankly isn't fit for purpose. When you diffuse dry, the key is low heat, low speed AND avoiding no burny/hot scalp moments because a stable temperature control is everything.

Whilst I have a ridiculously expensive Dyson (justified given the amount of curlies I have but it should be making the coffee at that price) I also love the Bellissima Diffon Supreme. Its lightweight for longer use, even temperature controlled with ceramic technology that prevents frizz and guarantees smooth juicy curls. The price is reasonable coming in at £149.99. Wrapping Up

There is no doubt that with the plethora of curly hair accessories out there, it can feel somewhat daunting (and expensive), but my philosophy is to keep it simple but get the foundations in place which includes having the right accessories in your curly girl toolkit.
